The Society of Arts and Crafts’ Executive Director, Beth Ann Gerstein, occasionally hand chooses artists that are top in their field for exhibition at Craftboston. Craftboston Spring is entering its 10th year, and features 200 artists focused in the craft mediums.”

I am a 2011 Niche Award Finalist in the Judaica Category.

“Finalists receive an awards certificate, listing on the NICHE Awards website, listing in the Winter 2010 issue of NICHE magazine (professionals only) and a listing in the Buyers Market of American Craft (BMAC) February 2011 Buyers Guide (professionals & students).

Finalists are also invited to display their piece in a special display at the February 2011 BMAC (drop off & pick up of artwork will be required). Participating in the display exposes finalists’ work to thousands of buyers from across the country.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony held during BMAC, Feb. 12-15, 2011. Winners will receive an awards certificate, trophy, listing on the NICHE Awards website and prominent listing in the Spring 2011 issue of NICHE magazine.”

Although I was not a winner in either category I still learned a lot from this experience and will be trying again next year. It is quite an honor to be a finalist regardless of the outcome.

Two of your works have been selected as finalists in the 2010 NICHE Awards! Your piece entitled “Mezuzzah” is a finalist in Judaica. A second piece, “Kiddush Cup” is a finalist in Metal: Cast.

We received nearly 1,000 entries this year, and it is truly an honor to be selected as a finalist.

This is the most excited i’ve been since the Saul Bell Design Awards!

Haystack was an incredible experience. These two mezuzahs are just some of the pieces I finished while at this workshop. Working with Fred Fenster and Hiroko Yamada changed my perspective of my own work. I’m working in my studio and working harder then ever before. Keep checking back to see what I am up to.

I will be assisting Fred Fenster and Hiroko Yamada this summer at Haystack Mountain School of Art July 19th though the 31st. This is such an honor. I’m am beyond excited to learn and help out Fred this summer!!!

Finalist in the Rio Grand Saul Bell Design Awards

Jewelry designer and artist Joy Stember of Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, was recently recognized as a finalist in the 2008 Saul Bell Design Award competition for jewelry and hollowware design. Both the designer and her hollowware piece were honored in Las Vegas during JCK Las Vegas in June. Stember‘s striking piece, “Kiddush Cup” was constructed using bronze and silver. When looking down at the cup, the base makes a Star of David symbol. The Kiddush is a blessing recited over wine or grape juice to sanctify the Shabbat or a Jewish holiday. Stember was a finalist for the Hollowware category. Winning and finalist pieces may be viewed online at www.saulbellaward.com.

To be included in theHollowwaresection: the predominant metal is silver and/or gold; includes vessels that are spun, drawn, forged and/or raised. Decorative fabricated or cast components may be incorporated into the design.

The 2008 competition challenged jewelry designers to push the boundaries of creativity as they created original and innovative pieces in any of five jewelry categories. Each designer chose one category as the foundation of their piece and integrated additional stones or materials as they wished, provided that the predominant material contained at least 75% of the finished, original design.

Upcoming Show at Wayne Art Center

I have been chosen to participate in CraftForms 2008 14th Annual International Juried Exhibition of Contemporary Craft. There were 711 entries and I was one out of 94 artists chosen for this very prestigious exhibition. Two Judaica pieces will be showcased there. You can check them at in the gallery section of my website. One is titled “Kiddush Cup” the other is “Heaven Sent Yad”. If you are in the area please come check them out December 6, 2008 from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. for the opening reception and artist talk. The exhibition will run through January 24, 2009.
